About this performance

Scheherazade: Stories in Sound

Orchestra Toronto closes its season with an immersive exploration of storytelling, culture, and orchestral colour. The program opens with Saman Shahi’s Visions of Oasis (تصویر باغ), featuring Ava Rostamian (voice), Shahin Fayyaz (tar), and Bamdad Fotouhi (tombek), integrating Persian musical traditions with orchestral textures to construct a narrative of reflection and imagination. Nielsen’s Selections from Aladdin Suite follow, demonstrating the composer’s evocative engagement with fantastical narratives. Mychael Danna’s Mother Teresa highlights the solo artistry of Emma Pennell, presenting a sound world shaped by themes of compassion, devotion, and quiet strength. The program concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, whose intricate motifs and sonic palette evoke the legendary tales of One Thousand and One Nights.
