About this performance

East Meets West: Harmony Across Cultures

Orchestra Toronto explores the meeting of tradition and innovation, featuring Amely Zhou on erhu and Razak Pirani on tabla. The concert opens with Reena Esmail’s Testament (from Vishwas), blending Indian classical sensibilities with Western orchestral textures to explore themes of memory, identity, and faith. Canadian composer Kevin Lau’s Between the Earth and Forever follows, an expansive and reflective work that draws listeners into meditative landscapes and delicate harmonies. The program concludes with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, a masterwork of tension and resilience, with dramatic contrasts and haunting motifs reflecting the composer’s struggles under Soviet censorship while affirming human endurance.
