In 1990, Toronto-born pianist Jason Li was a semifinalist at the 9thTchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow, just one month after graduating with honours from the University of Toronto's medical school. In 1988, he was a semifinalist and the recipient of the "Pianist-of-Most-Promise" Prize at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City, Utah. In June 1992, he reached the quarterfinal in the 5th Sydney International Piano Competition in Australia.

 

Jason Li began piano study at age 5 and received the A.R.C.T. Piano Performer's diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music at age 15. His teachers included Janice Lin, S. K. Ang, and Adrienne Shannon.  He has been studying with Professor Boris Lysenko of the University of Toronto since 1983.  He was a constant participant and prize winner at local and national competitions prior to his venture into international competitions. In 1984, he won the piano trophy and the Glenn Gould Memorial Scholarship at the Toronto Kiwanis Music Festival. In 1986, he was the winner of the piano section of the International Stepping Stones of the Canadian Music Competitions (CMC).

 

Before concentrating mainly on the piano, Jason Li was an accomplished violinist under the tutelage of Tak Ng Lai. He was a member of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra, Toronto Chinese Chamber Orchestra and orchestras in Huntsville and Bracebridge.

 

Jason Li has given solo recitals in Canada and in the U.S.A. and has performed chamber music and appeared as soloist with orchestras. He has performed in Massey Hall, Roy Thomson Hall, George Weston Recital Hall and Glenn Gould Studio.

 

In addition, Jason Li has been active in fundraising events performing for the Pelletier House Foundation since 1994, in the annual `Life Beat' fundraising concerts put on by Toronto’s healthcare professionals for different charities since 1991, and for the CMC. In September, 1996, he gave a very successful solo recital at North York's George Weston Recital Hall. This concert was recorded live onto a compact disc Jason Li in Concert.

 

Jason Li has performed as soloist with the Huntsville Festival Orchestra in Huntsville and Gravenhurst under Kerry Stratton, the Scarborough Philharmonic Orchestra under Jerome Summers, Clyde Mitchell and Michael Newnham, the Han Feng Chamber Orchestra under Ka Nin Chan, and the Chinese Chamber Orchestra under Tak Ng Lai.

 

Presently, Jason Li practices family medicine in West Hill, Toronto.
